About this project

Project Aims and Objectives

These web pages are an extension of an earlier Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences (GEES) Subject Centre funded project to develop a pack of reflective materials for a level 6 module in Learning Facilitation, providing resources for both students and staff delivering the module. The aims of the project were to integrate personal and professional development activities to support a student work-based placement, in particular to encourage reflection, appraisal and planning skills, and enhance self-awareness and self-presentation. The module runs parallel to a BSc Geography and Environmental Science level 6 module in which personal and career planning activities focusing on a mock application and interview exercise have been established for a number of years. This on-line version of the resource builds on all the materials used by both groups.

These resources help students make clearer links between their academic study and future workplace skills, and promote exploration of a range of career options. By developing subject-specific materials which encourage PDP processes such as skills articulation, reflection on learning, and action-planning within an employability context, students increase their self-awareness and broaden their career ideas. Similar employability resources have been developed at The University of Northampton with funding from three other HEA Subject Centres.

As outlined above, the material builds on well-established curriculum activity with level 6 students. Ten tasks include an analysis of skills developed through specific assignments, refining evidence for use in selection processes, and practising networking skills. Careers resources are also provided, including links to graduate case studies, as a basis for a careers exploration exercise.
